Sealants

Sealants come in many forms with a range of features and capabilities.

Essentially the main aim of sealants, whatever the specific formulation, is to seal surfaces, joints, and gaps to prevent leakage or ingress of various substances. This includes water, acids, bases, gases, dust, dirt, weather conditions and insects.

There are two types of sealants:

Sealants are high performance products with gap filling properties and environmental resistance that benefit a great number of applications.

Flexible sealants are ideal where expansion and contraction will be expected. Thread sealants secure pipes and other connections to prevent leakage due to vibration, pressure, or temperature variations. Gasketing sealants are highly resistant to fluids and gases, temperature, pressure variations. Acoustic sealants dampen noise and vibration for end user comfort.

Sealants fall into two main categories; bonding and non bonding sealants.

Non bonding sealants are good for gap filling and sealing, reliable and stable. They are particularly flexible, and so suitable for dynamic conditions. They also facilitate maintenance and repairs, which can be conducted without damaging surfaces.

Bonding sealants are stronger, more rigid, and can take more weight. Not only do they have the sealing properties of non bonding sealants, but they also create a strong adhesive bond between surfaces. Bonding sealants are less flexible than non bonding sealants, in order to facilitate adhesion.
